A lot of new bloggers do not realize that SEO is just as important to them as it is for a small business or non-profit. Thank you for your comment!
A lot of people have asked why Ryan and Garrett chose me to be the face of Webbin’ It. It makes complete sense given the behavior of my distant relatives and the stigma created by the entertainment industry. Everyone remembers Arachnophobia; nobody remembers Charlotte’s Web. It’s the story of my life! Some people get jumpy at the mention of spiders. I assure you I’m a spider of a different sort. You know Casper the Friendly Ghost? I’m Simon, the Lovable Eight-legged… Okay, well, it’s a working title.
The fact is that the Webbin’ It philosophy is such that the webs that are associated with my species make me the perfect embodiment of just how Webbin’ It believes your web presence should work.
For more detail on this, you could read through the Webbin’ It Manifesto. But I’ll give you a snapshot here. Your web presence relies on a balance of three factors: your website, your social media and your search engine optimization. If any one of those factors is lacking your web presence won’t be at its optimum best.
Social Media is often the most underused resource. Really, it boils down to time and a perception and I would be happy to boil those down for you.
We know that even businesses and non-profits, that have employees or volunteers dedicated to social media, can feel like they must stuff ten pounds of social media into five pounds of a day. When social media sites add features that their users will consume, more content with adding those uses of social media can be seem difficult. I would even wager to guess that sometimes those people, or the owners of businesses and the operators of non-profits, get to a point where they decide their best route is to do Social Media when they can and call it good. Unfortunately, Social Media is a ranking factor for search engines. Failure to contribute consistently will cause Google to look at other websites as relevant results. If you’ve built a fantastic website and have found the SEO sweet spot your web presence won’t be where it could be because others are posting, tweeting and more every day.
The perception is that “all these people glued to their phones won’t find me on social media.” I tend to think that there are some that even look at people “glued to their phones” and decide that they aren’t the customer for them because they’re annoyed by it. I understand that, but the trend among those people glued to their phone is that they’re using those social media sites like others use Google to search for things. If you’re not on social media, but they’re searching for what you offer, they’re finding your competition. If you want to compete, you must show up to the arena!
Speaking of social media, Webbin’ It is on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook.
Search Engine Optimization is a must. Keywords aren’t magical things, but they are important to your spot in search engine result pages. If you don’t have them in line, you can win at social media every day with the best designed website on the internet (done for you by Webbin’ It, of course) and your web presence will still not be at the level that brings your business customers, your non-profit donors and volunteers, or your blog viewers and followers.
Your web design is also key and more key than you realize. When you have a clean and concise design people stay on your website. When you don’t the website visitor bounces. Bounce Rate is the percentage of users that visit your home page and browse no further. Dwell Time is still a mystery to some but many feel that this is a combination of time spent on each page, the number of pages visited within a session and the total session time on your site. That said, if your website is cluttered or not pleasing to the eye, the user will go somewhere else for their information, product or service. Again, you now have great social media and great SEO, but your Bounce Rate and lack of Dwell Time could be bringing your website’s potential down a third.
For the record, I will admit, the web came first. I just came along to help manage it all. I am, naturally, the logical choice for the face of Webbin’ It.
This blog is the first in a series called “We Are Webbin’ It.” It also will be the title of our first Facebook Live called “Webbin’ It Wisdom.” We will be doing this live from a great place called Third Space Coffee on December 13 at 7:00 PM, Mountain Time (remember to adjust for your time zone) from Third Space Coffee in Colorado Springs, CO.
